earlier this week we found out why some republicans thought were asking whether chuck hagel had ties to a secretive group called friends of hamas. what started as a sarcastic joke by a guy. it turned into a serious feature on a right wing website and then caught on from there. here's steve colbert. >> friends of hamas is even worse than it sound us because this organization is so sinister that it doesn't even exist. the fact that these organizations don't exist only makes it more suspicious that chuck hagel has been tied to them. what else is he hiding that hasn't happened? is he a member of the al qaeda kids club? what about the muslim brotherhood or the muslim sisterhood of the traveling pants? what are his ties to the dead poets society. and why are they dead? do they know too much about benghazi? president obama, you must withdraw hagel's nomination or you'll lose the support of every moderate republican, another group that doesn't exist. >> now, after all that brouhaha, it looks like hagel now has enough votes in the senate to get confirmed next week. next we west coast texan re

earlier today there was a cloture vote on chuck hagel. this is essentially what we knew last week is that republicans were going to hold up the eventual askengs of chuck hagel to become defense secretary in case there was anything in his past that could damn him. seven days later apparently there's nothing in his past so they're comfortable moving forward. he's expected to be confirmed probably within the next five minutes. you can even have it in this block if we're so fortunate. >> does that not prove that the whole nonsense around the nomination process on this man was simply invented? it was theatrics. there was no substance. it's the same as the friends of hamas. shall are they? >> reporter: i think it does show that the republican strategy was to try to bloody him as much as possible with the belief if they were able to do it enough he would perhaps withdraw. he was pretty vehement last week he would not withdraw. now with the sequester looking like it's going to go forward, my calculations there's $46 billion in military cuts over

>> i think it means that hagel should be confirmed absolutely. this is over and they need a vote to confirm hagel as secretary of defense as soon as they come back into session. >> all right. "wired" magazine reports that senate minority leader mitch mcconnell asked the pentagon to get to the bottom of what he called a very troubling story. "i'm writing on behalf of a constituent who has contacted me regarding guantanamo bay prisoners receiving post-9/11 gi bill benefits." the constituent wrote to mcconnell about this disturbing information after reading an article on the duffel blog. it turns out that duffel blog reports on all kinds of stuff, like syria hosting iraq war reenactors. in other words, it's satire, folks. and now mcconnell's office is defending its actions? they put out a statement saying "senator mcconnell's office is hyper vigilant about finding answers to the questions raised by his constituents." how do you make that up, eric? >> that's a ridiculous statement from senator mcconnell's office. yes, senate offices, house office, th
